As the global population becomes increasingly concentrated in urban areas, the world has witnessed growing threats to urban safety and security. While some of these threats have taken the form of large-scale events such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks, others are the widespread and more common symptoms of physical, economic and social inequalities within the world's cities. The 2007 Global Report will be devoted to three major dimensions of urban safety and security: crime and violence; security of tenure and protection against forced eviction; and natural and human-made disasters. The report will focus on appropriate urban planning and management methods designed to: reduce the incidence and impacts of crime and violence; reduce the incidence and consequences of tenure insecurity (including forced evictions), with respect to both shelter and informal sector enterprises; and mitigate the impacts of disasters (both natural and human-made)., Enhancing Urban Safety and Security addresses three major threats to the safety and security of cities: crime and violence; insecurity of tenure and forced evictions; and natural and human-made disasters. It analyses worldwide trends with respect to each of these threats, paying particular attention to their underlying causes and impacts, as well as to the good policies and best practices that have been adopted at the city, national and international levels in order to address these threats. The report adopts a human security perspective, concerned with the safety and security of people rather than of states, and highlights issues that can be addressed through appropriate urban policy, planning, design and governance., Named 2008 Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine The Global Report on Human Settlements is the most authoritative and up-to-date assessment of conditions and trends in the world's cities. From a pro-cycling perspective, "Bike Lanes Are White Lanes" highlights many problematic aspects of urban bicycling culture and its advocacy as well as positive examples of people trying earnestly to bring their community together through bicycling.Political sustainability at the city level differs in several important ways from academic principles of sustainability.Based on ethnographic research in Kingston, Jamaica and Willemstad, Curaçao, Jaffe contrasts the environmentalism of largely middle-class professionals, who emphasize issues such as biodiversity and marine conservation, with that of inner-city residents, who focus on garbage, air pollution, and untreated sewage. In this sophisticated, pioneering study of Brasília from its inception in 1957 to the present, James Holston analyzes this attempt to change society by building a new kind of city and the ways in which the paradoxes of constructing an imagined future subvert its utopian premises. This important book draws on two decades of pioneering social and ecological studies in Baltimore to propose a new way to think about cities and their social, political, and ecological complexity that will apply in many different parts of the world. As urban dwellers travel to work, home and play they carve random or predictable pathways across neighbourhoods and districts.Circulation And the Cityinvestigates the urban capacity for movement, The city as a space of circulation, by taking into account not only the physical displacement of people, but the circulation of cultures, things, and ideas.Firstly summarising traditional urban design principles and how Chinese cities have transformed over time, it then introduces and offers a theoretic ground and scientific methodology for understanding the evolution of urban forms, initially developed in Western countries. Each stunning photograph is accompanied by an extended caption and there is an introduction by one of the world's most respected nature photographers.Conservation behavior assists the investigation of species endangerment associated with managing animals impacted by anthropogenic activities. This book shows the highlights that have marked the festival over the years. The focus of this book is on understanding and explaining the way that our increasingly networked world impacts on the legibility of cities; that is how we experience and inhabit urban space. It employs a theoretical framework that examines the mechanisms, development, function, and phylogeny of behavior variation in order to develop practical tools for preventing biodiversity loss and extinction.
